55 trade bodies to boycott Chinese goods in Ahmedabad as #BoycottChineseProducts takes INDIA by storm

AHMEDABAD: Coming out in support of Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry's (GCCI) call to boycott China-made goods, some 55 trade and industry associations, mainly from Ahmedabad, on Monday agreed to boycott Chinese products in light of Beijing's continued support to Pakistan at international fora.
The apex trade body last week decided to boycott made in China goods in the wake of the dragonland supporting Pakistan by blocking India's bid to designate Jaish-e-Mohammad chief Masood Azhar as a terrorist at the United Nations (UN) and stonewalling India's entry into the Nuclear Supplier Group (NSG).

GCCI convened a meeting of its affiliate associations to intensify the stir against China and chalk out a future course of action."Out of the 70-75 trade bodies invited, 55 attended and all of them agreed not to im port Chinese products," Shailesh Patwari, senior vice president, GCCI, said after the meeting in Ahmedabad.

Representatives of Vadodara chamber of commerce and industry, Rajkot chamber of commerce and industry, cloth merchants' associations, Muscati Mahajan and New Cloth Market among others were at the meeting.

"There are various products for which we need not be dependent on China. We should use domestically-made products by boycotting Chinese ones," he added. These goods include firecrackers, lighting systems including bulbs, toys, computers, ceramic products, kites and threads. The associations decided that they would not import these products. When asked about boycotting China-made firecrackers, he said, "Many traders had already imported firecrackers before the call to avoid Chinese products was made. They will be allowed to sell their stocks as we do not want them to make losses. However, we have asked them not to procure more firecrackers and threads from China during Makarsankranti. They have agreed to this," said Bipin Patel, president of GCCI.

"As far as Gujarat is concerned, the state imports Chinese goods worth Rs 12,000 crore annually, which includes chemicals, bulk drugsAPIs for life saving drugs, textile machineries, transformers among other things," Patwari said. As per GCCI estimates, China's exports to India stand at $ 61billion, while India exports only $9 billion worth goods to the land of the dragon.
