Norway the New customer for P-8A Poseidon

Norway plans to order five Boeing Co P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol planes to maintain its surveillance capacity and meet future security challenges, the NATO country’s Defence Ministry said.
Norway’s long maritime border with neighbouring Russia has become a renewed focus for the country’s military planners following the Russian annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea region. Norway’s territorial waters also stretch far into the Arctic.
Neighbouring Sweden and Finland, which are not in the NATO alliance, have also expressed concerns about incursions by Russian submarines and other naval vessels.
The submarine-hunting patrol planes will replace Norway’s current fleet of six P-3 Orion and three DA-20 Jet Falcon aircraft and are expected to be delivered in 2021 and 2022. Norway will also buy related intelligence equipment, the ministry said.



Special features of Poseidon:
P 8 Poseidon is a Long Range patrolling, surveillance, reconnaissance, anti submarine, anti Ship warfare aircraft which is based on the platform of 737-800ERX with the length of 40 metres, spanned by 37.64 and height of 12.83 metres. Crewed by 2 and 7 special mission officers, the plane is powered by 2X CFM56-7B27A turbofan engines which produces 120KN of thrust from each. The combat radius is upto 2222Km and ferry range is upto 8,300km. The aircraft can stay at service ceiling of 40,000fts from sea level with the speed of 926 km/hr with internal fuel capacity of 34,100kg.
The avionics it consists, flight management system developed by Smiths aerospace based on Integrated Open Architecture, MX 20HD digital Electro Optical and Infra Red multi spectrum sensors turret is gyro stabilised which is having 7 other sensors such as Infra red, CCDTV, image intensifier, laser rangefinder, laser illuminator and APS-137 D (V)5 maritime radar and Signal Integrator(SIGINT) developed by Raytheon and APY 10 Multi Mission Surface Surveillance Radar.
Weapons and armaments
With external 6 hardpoints and 5 internal hard points, it can carry Mk54 torpedoes, Harpoon anti ship missiles and Maverick Air to Surface Missiles and Aim 9 and Aim 120 Air to Air Missiles.
